    Event sneaks fun into lesson about veterans

    Monica Maserang's children and their friend thought they were just playing with colorful soldier-themed stickers, drawing with glitter glue and dabbling with makeshift replica military toys.

    The children didn’t seem to suspect learning was involved as they competed for their favorite helicopter or tank stickers Sunday at the Silent Wings Museum.

    “I get the helicopter and the car,” 9-year-old E.J. Briceno told 7-year-old Nathan Maserang before glancing at another sheet of stickers. “No, I want the soldier helmet.”

    But there were plenty of stickers and art supplies to go around for the nearly half-dozen children as they decorated their own military-style miniature footlockers, made paper poppy flowers and wrote letters to U.S. troops overseas Sunday afternoon as part of the museum’s What is a Veteran? activities event.
