The Bicycle Transportation Alliance announced Friday that it will no longer actively oppose mandatory bike helmet laws after a poll of members showed nearly 80 percent wear protective headgear every time they ride.

At the same time, the policy change doesn’t necessarily mean Oregon’s largest bicycling advocacy group will press for a state law requiring helmets for bicycle riders over 16, said  Rob Sadowsky, the BTA’s executive director.

“In the past,” Sadowsky said, “we would automatically show up to testify against such legislation and rally the troops against the bill.
