My football helmet display with autographs of some of the greatest players in nfl history. I got...
From what he remembers, and it isn't much, Cameron Williams was cold.
On a steaming autumn day last year in Burtonsville, Md., the 13-year-old shivered as he walked back to his Unity Thunder football team's huddle, barely able to keep his eyes open. Dizzy, he'd been hit hard - really hard - twice that game.
His head ached for relief, but he knew how football players were supposed to act. How pain was a part of the game. Then he took two more vicious hits at practice the next day, and Cameron realized it was time to tell someone how much he was hurting.
His mother whisked him away to the family doctor, who told Cameron he'd been concussed twice in the past week.
Because of the undeveloped nature of their bodies, youth like Cameron could be at a higher risk for concussions than their professional counterparts, according to medical experts.
Collectors Quest: Describe the items in your Super Bowl collection.
Dan: I have lots of items in my Super Bowl collection. Some of them are your everyday items that you think you’ll use often, like hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts. You see a lot of fans getting excited that they’re at the game, and they buy all this clothing. And then you bring it all home and unpack it and think of how cool you’ll feel when you wear it in public. Years later when you finally dig up that t-shirt that has the two opposing teams’ helmets with funky graphics, the out-of-date Super Bowl logo, with a text-formatting and some weird patterns that are long out of style, stating a game that is long since forgotten, not to mention from a year that’s not even in this current millennium, you kind of think to yourself, ‘what was I thinking?’
Though for me, I’ve lately focused on the small items that I can put on a bookshelf like mini replica helmets with the current Super Bowl logo (as there’s a different logo each year), shot glasses (as those are actually functional and fun to use year after year), and game day programs. I remember when I went to a Super Bowl in junior high, that was pretty much the number one request from my friends: ‘can you bring me back a program?’ I’m not even sure they knew why they wanted one; it just seemed logical, I guess.
